For every part 1, there is a part 2! This conclusion was, of course, written by Yuni Oha as well! Please, take a look.

Kamitatsu attacks with an intense breath of white and black flames. Sonic, Nocta, and Ryu scatter to avoid getting hit. The dragon roars in rage.

From the air, Nocta shouts, “Ninjutsu Art: Quill Cascade!” She begins to throw an unrelenting barrage of quills. These seem to do little but annoy Kamitatsu. It looks up to aim its flames at Nocta.

Ryu notices Kamitatsu’s aim, leaps up, and yanks Nocta down and out of Kamitatsu’s path.

Meanwhile, Sonic runs straight at the serpent and grabs onto its tail. This allows Sonic to climb up onto it and run up the spiraling back. Kamitatsu twists and shakes in an attempt to force Sonic off, but Sonic manages to stay on. Once atop Kamitatsu’s head, Sonic jumps straight up, curls into a ball, and slams straight back downward, landing a powerful blow to the head.

Kamitatsu roars in aguish and attempts to force Sonic off by slamming its head against the roof. Nocta manages to swoop in and pull Sonic away before he’s crushed. They land back on the ground.

Ryu now adopts a pose and announces, “Ninjutsu Art: Fire Storm!” Ryu attacks Kamitatsu with a turbulent and churning breath of fire. This seems to do little but enrage Kamitatsu even further.

Sonic, preparing for another assault, runs at Kamitatsu. Kamitatsu roars and turns to Sonic in order to attack with more black and white flames. Sonic’s eyes widen as he realizes he’s too committed to the run to dodge.

That’s when Ryu leaps in shouting, “Look out, Hedgehog!” He knocks Sonic to the side with his shoulder, pushing Sonic to safety, but leaving himself to be scorched by the flames.

Finally getting back on track with Season 1, with this very unusual episode of The Chaos Project. What makes it so unusual, you may ask? Well, that would be because I didn’t write it! This episode was written by a special guest author! Stay tuned for more information. But for now, please take a look.

Press Garden

A camouflaged Espio moves carefully and observes his surroundings. Numerous pieces of scaffolding and machinery have been erected around a strange pattern seemingly burned into the ground, and Egg Pawns march back and forth performing various tasks. Under a tarp, Heavy Shinobi orders several Egg Pawns about. Eggman, via a communicator, says, “I want this project wrapped up as quickly and efficiently as possible.”

Heavy Shinobi responds, “Yes, of course, Master Eggman.” He points to a pair of robots carrying heavy equipment and shouts, “Do not delay, for this equipment must be set up, before nightfall.”

One of the Egg Pawns attempts to salute, but this causes it to lose its grip on the machinery, and it falls to the ground and crushes the Egg Pawn. Two more Egg Pawns rush in to pick up the machinery, while a third collects the destroyed robot.

Espio produces a throwing star. He says quietly to himself, “One precise strike could take out Heavy Shinobi.”

As he prepares to throw his star, Heavy Shinobi suddenly swivels around and announces, “Show yourself, assassin! I know, that you are there!” Espio freezes up. After no response, Shinobi declares, “So be it, I do not need to see you to destroy you!” He swiftly throws an Asteron shuriken straight at Espio.

Espio gasps, shocked to have been pinpointed. He quickly pulls out a kunai knife and deflects the projectile. Figuring there’s no need to continue in hiding, he releases his camouflage in a flurry of wind.

Heavy Shinobi draws his sword and leaps at Espio. Espio leaps as well, and the two cross blades midway between them, then quickly leap back.

Once back on the ground, Espio runs to the side, throwing a barrage of ninja stars at his opponent. Heavy Shinobi uses his sword to deflect each and every one of the projectiles.

Heavy Shinobi leaps down preparing to slash with his blade. Before Espio can react, Sonic knocks Shinobi aside with a Spin Attack.

Sonic lands next to Espio and asks, “You alright?”

Espio nods a wordless thanks. He suddenly shouts, “Look out!”

Before either Sonic or Espio can react, Heavy Shinobi has leaped back into action, and manages to slash his sword across both of them. The special blade causes ice to encase both Sonic and Espio the moment it makes contact, freezing them solid. Heavy Shinobi announces, “Enough waiting, activate the machine!”

From within his icy prison, Espio shouts a muffled, “No!”

No, it’s not the Sonic Adventure special yet. But it is leading up to it. I promise that’ll be coming very soon. But until then, please enjoy what comes before.

???

A child’s eyes look down slowly from the blue sky above, to the mountain of a reddish hue that rises in front, to the base of the mountain at his feet, where an unmarked headstone is planted by a mound of recently-moved earth. The child does nothing, says nothing for quite some time. Finally, he looks to his gloved, spiked hand, which holds a familiar white flower. Then, he begins to speak. “We are both the last.” Slowly, he kneels down, and places the flower gently on the mound. “It shouldn’t have to be that way.” He remains there, kneeling on the ground in a somber silence.

“Knuckles…”

Knuckles turns sharply in the direction of the sound. “Huh!? Who said that?” The sound of his own voice prompts him to look down at his hands, no longer small like a child’s.

The distant feminine voice merely repeats, “Knuckles…”

Knuckles gets up from his spot on the ground, and starts to run in the direction of the voice, through a valley between two mountains. He calls as he goes, “Who’s there!? Who are you!?”

Soon, he exits into an open area. A bridge stretches out over a body of water towards an isolated landmass, where a crumbling stone shrine holds the Master Emerald at its top, in its whole form. The Emerald glows and pulsates brightly. “That shouldn’t be here…” He continues to run, across the bridge, and up the stone steps to the top of the shrine.

Once Knuckles reaches the top, he places a hand on the Emerald. “What’s happening here…?”

“Great danger is coming.”

Knuckles turns around with surprise. Standing there behind him is a familiar Echidna girl dressed in traditional tribal garb. “Tikal?”

Tikal looks down to the ground, as if in shame. “We couldn’t protect you any longer… But you must survive. Great danger is coming.”

“What do you mean? What danger?”

For a moment, Tikal seems to fade in and out of existence. As if not noticing, she continues, “A great calamity, as foretold long ago…  The entire world may be consumed.”

“Consumed by what? I don’t understand!”

As Tikal continues to fade, her words do as well. “… …Chaos… … …alone… … …you.” She disappears completely.

Knuckles reaches out for her. “Wait! Come back!” He turns around. The Master Emerald, too, begins to fade away. “No!” He looks down, and takes a step back in surprise. The ruins beneath his feet, the island it sits on, the ocean far below, the sky all around, all of it begins to give way to empty blackness. One by one, everything around him disappears. In the empty void, he collapses to his knees, staring down into the darkness.

A child’s voice mutters meekly, “I don’t want to be alone…”

Three years ago – During the events of Sonic Forces
Four days after Sonic’s return

Rouge enters a spherical room that is quite massive in size, with many whirring mechanical parts and lights in the walls. But the elevated platform she stands on leads to the very center of the room, where a glittering green Chaos Emerald floats inside a glass chamber, power clearly running through it. “Have we really gotten to the point where a Chaos Emerald barely even makes it in as a backup plan, Doctor?” She walks up to the glass. “Well, if it’s really that unimportant to you, I’m sure you won’t mind if I take it for myself.”

“Looking for something?”

Rouge turns with a gasp. “Infinite!? But you’re supposed to be down on the planet!”

Infinite descends slowly to the floor. “Yes, I am. But why should I limit myself to being in just a single place at once…”

Two more voices echo, “…when I can be in three?” Two more Infinites descend down on either side of the first.

The one on the left continues, “Or four?”

The one on the right finishes, “Or…infinite?”

Rouge breathes, “Replicas.”

The Infinite in the center answers, “Ah, I never accused you of being ignorant. But the trash you choose to side with…well they certainly aren’t the brightest.”

“I don’t suppose you’d believe that I came in here looking for a way to stop them?”

The middle Infinite shakes his head. “You’ve been a useful tool, Rouge the Bat.”

The one on the left continues, “But your usefulness…”

The one on the right finishes, “…has reached its end.”

The center one charges an orb of energy in his hand, and throws it. Rouge dives back out of the way, latching on to the side of the Emerald chamber. Another orb quickly follows. Rouge dives off of her perch, and the orb hits the chamber, cracking the glass. Rouge flies over one of the Infinites, and attempts to drill kick right down onto it. It easily darts out of the way. The moment she lands on the ground, she’s struck in the back by a laser bolt. An Infinite catches her in front with a kick before she even hits the ground again, knocking her high into the air. An Infinite is already waiting there in the air, and strikes down with a heel, sending her straight back into the hard ground.

The closest Infinite to Rouge leans down to whisper into her ear, “This is where you die. The Death Egg will stand. Your friends will perish, if not now, then in a few short hours, when the plan is complete. After all your hard work…all of the terrible things you had to do just to convince me of your deception…it all amounts to nothing. You’ve lost.”

On Empire Day, a great battle was lost, and Rouge fled from the Rebellion to work for their enemies. But years ago, on the day that Infinite attacked, something similar once happened.

Rouge watches as a black-painted Death Egg Robot collapses into the sand of the Lost Valley under the onslaught of the GUN airships that fire from above. A buzz comes in her communicator. “Rouge, this is Shadow. What’s going on?”

“Finally back from your top-secret mission, are you? Did you find Eggman’s weapon?”

“No. Now tell me what’s happening.”

“Well, there’s this big battle in Green Hill. Eggman’s trying to take back the city. But we pretty much have it wrapped up.”

“Rouge, are you telling me the truth?”

“What’s the point of lying about it? Eggman got word that Sonic is nearby and mounted a massive assault. I mean, sure, A for effort, but it’s nothing to worry about. We’ve got the advantage now. Sonic is on his way too, so I don’t think it’s a big enough deal for you to head out.”

Shadow lets out a grunt of discontent, as if thinking deeply about something. “I can’t imagine the Doctor would do something like that without…” He trails off.

But Rouge hardly notices. Out of the central Eggman airship, the largest in the fleet, a point of pulsating crimson light slowly descends. Rouge lets out a gasp. “Shadow! This is not good! Hurry, get over here!”

Infinite’s voice booms loudly over the sandy plains, bringing an eerie silence to the battle. “Attention, insects of the military. You have been chosen as the first to witness the full extent of the power that will conquer this earth. Enjoy your final moments of life.”

Shadow’s voice can faintly be heard through the crackling static of the comm. “W––t –s i–, Ro–g–? W––– h––pe––d?” The voice is completely lost.

Infinite spreads his arms wide, and a massive wave of negative energy sweeps over the entire battlefield. Soldiers are lifted from the ground, tumbling uncontrollably through the air, and flying mechs seem no longer able to keep control, plummeting towards the ground. All of the airships aim their fire directly at Infinite. He chuckles softly as the vast majority of the fire passes him by completely. He points up an outstretched hand, and fires off a thin crimson laser beam of his own. Though the beam is thin, it wreaks massive destruction as it carves through the entire fleet one ship at a time, sending them all diving down into the negative space.

Infinite lets both of his arms drop down to his sides. In the air around him, countless hundreds of cubes are generated, each floating independently. He stretches back, then crosses his arms in front of him. One by one, in rapid succession, the cubes are launched away from him at immense speed. Each one seems to target a person or a machine. And each time one comes in contact, it appears to erase its target from existence in an instant.

From a perch high atop a cliff, away from the chaos, Rouge watches in horror as hundreds upon hundreds of soldiers appear to be annihilated before her eyes. Even the falling airships are removed.

Suddenly, the bubble of negative space contracts. There are no more cubes. And no more sign that GUN was ever there. Save for the wrecks of the Death Egg Robots, and the Egg Pawns quickly taking up defensive positions throughout the lost valley, there is no sign of any battle at all. The rest of the Eggman’s forces surge onwards towards the city.

—–—

Later…

Infinite bends down to pick something up from the streets of the city. “I’m sure we can find…some use for this…thing.”

Rouge’s voice sounds behind him, “I might be able to help with that.” Infinite doesn’t bother turning at the sound. “The name’s Rouge. I’m something of a treasure hunter. A jewel expert, you might say. And I want in.”

Preview: Season 1, Episode 8

Well, as much as I’d love to do an animated preview for every episode, that last one took almost as long to make as the episode itself, and that was supposed to be an easy one! If I kept making those, I wouldn’t have any time left to actually write the stories they’re trying to tell! So, for now, it’s back to the old, boring, block-of-text previews. That certainly doesn’t mean that I’ll never do another animation again, it just might be a while. We’ll have to wait and see. And so, without further delay, I give you the preview for the very first Mid-Season Finale, coming one week from today!

The Eggman Empire Day Festival — Empire City

Down on the streets, citizens of many races and species are gathered in great lines down the sidewalks, staring up silently as confetti rains down from the sky. Speakers loudly blare a familiar yet strangely upbeat tune celebrating the Eggman Empire, and the sound of cheering can be heard as the first balloon float approaches between the skyscrapers, depicting a more classic appearance of Eggman, even blown up in a familiar pose. Despite the odd cheering, there don’t seem to be many happy faces in the crowd. Large digital screens hung up on the walls of buildings show zoomed images of what appears to be the same crowd, though that digital crowd seems unusually excited. Several of the real people in the back rows give an occasional nervous glance back at the guard robots stationed periodically behind the groups of people, weapons raised raised up to their chests as if prepared to fire on a moment’s notice.

One robot is suddenly drawn back into the shadows in a blur, and the sound of crunching metal can be heard. No one seems to notice. A few moments later, another disappears in the same way. This time, just a few people manage to see. Whispers quickly begin to spread through the crowd. The guard robots start to scan around on high alert, but still they disappear one by one, some hit with weapons, others by more direct attacks. By the time the second float approaches, depicting the Egg Mobile carrying a large checkered ball on a chain, there’s a clear excitement and confusion amongst the crowd. And that’s when Sonic appears on top of it.

He wears a large earpiece with a microphone that extends most of the way down to his mouth. When he speaks, his voice is greatly amplified, booming through the streets of the city. “Citizens of Empire City! As most of you probably know, my name is Sonic the Hedgehog!” All of the screens on the walls that had been showing the floats are now pointed directly at him, so the entire city can see. “No matter what Eggman’s been trying to tell you, I’m still alive, and I’m still fighting!”

The members of the Rebellion, now spread throughout the crowd, start to cheer. The rest of the crowd quickly joins in.

“Eggman wants us to give up! To accept his rule, to celebrate it! But we’re doing no such thing! The Rebellion will keep fighting until this world is ours again! And if you care about this world, if you’re tired of Eggman’s tyranny, then you can–”

“You can scatter like insects to avoid a far worse fate.” Infinite’s voice projects through the streets just as loudly as Sonic’s. “Because your little blue savior won’t be saving anyone today.” Infinite descends down to stand on the float across from Sonic, caught on the cameras for the whole city to see.

Sonic doesn’t lose his confidence. “Well, look who’s back from the dead. The masked clown. I almost can’t believe you’ve been hiding from me all this time. It’s been years, hasn’t it? Guess I must’ve left a pretty big impression.”

Infinite lets out a booming laugh as he adjusts the mask on his face. “How amusing it is that you think I fear you, filthy little sewer rat. It may have been years for you, but it wasn’t so long ago that I held your life in my hands. You are the only one who has something to fear.”

“I wasn’t afraid of you before, and I’ve only gotten stronger since then.”

“You could never defeat me alone.”

“I never said I was alone.”

On the streets below, the members of the Rebellion step forwards amidst their crowds, cheered along by the citizens around them.

Infinite pushes his mask up once again. “True. But then, neither did I.”

Heavy King slams down onto the street in front of Knuckles and Hero. Citizens immediately begin to scatter, screaming in terror with the new danger so close to them. But he is also not alone. Heavy Rider zooms through the streets, skidding to a stop in front of Amy and Tails. Heavy Gunner jets through the air, drifting down with weapon pointed at Shadow and Omega. Heavy Shinobi leaps in to cut off the escape route of Vector and Espio.

“So, you’re working with Eggman again? Guess some things never change.”

Infinite answers as he lifts back into the air, “We’ve been expecting you. Are you afraid yet?”

“Hmph.” Sonic wipes across the bottom of his nose, and takes off at a run, leaping from the float in a Spin Attack.

Rouge watches all these battles unfold nervously, slowly stepping back into the shadows of an alleyway. Until she is stopped by the muzzle of a gun pointed at her head. Fang gives a smirk behind her. “Rouge. Fancy meeting you here.”

The Battle of Empire City has begun. But something far more sinister lurks behind. What is the Anti-Rebellion planning? And where’s Heavy Magician?

Four years ago

If we wanted any chance of getting up to the ARK in time, I had to call in a favor from an old colleague of mine.

The Chaotix walk through the metallic halls of a military base, this one plastered with the familiar ‘G’ emblem of the Guardian Units of Nations. Espio voices quietly, “Are you sure we should be in here, Vector? Isn’t this a restricted area?”

“Relax, Espio! Trust me, this guy’s an old pal of mine, we worked together on a case way back. I’m sure they have an extra space shuttle or something lying around we can borrow. Besides, look around. Do you see anyone trying to stop us?”

Charmy questions, “Wouldn’t they be a little bit busy trying to, you know, fight off the alien invasion and all that? Maybe they don’t even know we’re here.”

They arrive at a metal door plastered in the white, full-decorated version of the GUN insignia. “Don’t worry guys, we’ll be on our way up to the ARK in no time.”

The door automatically rises open in front of them, opening the way to the GUN central command room, filled with lit screens of world maps and red blips, as well as other horrifying images of the war, managed by almost two dozen workers collecting and relaying information from them. On an elevated platform in the center of it all sits a man with silvery white hair in a decorated uniform, his back turned to the door. But at the sound of the door opening, he turns to see. “Now what’s going on!?” The man’s mismatched pair of red and blue eyes clearly identify him as the High Commander.

Vector greets, “Commander! So good to see you again! Sorry to bother you when I’m sure you’re so busy, but I’ve got a favor to ask, and it’s very important.”

“What!? Who are you, how did you get in here!?”

Charmy is quick to answer, “That’s an easy one! We’re the Chaotix, and the door was open!”

Espio questions quietly, “‘Old pal’, you said?”

“Well…really we were more like associates. He…might’ve questioned me about a case…once…” Espio groans and shakes his head.

The Commander rises to his feet, appearing furious. But before he can say anything more, the door opens once again, and a soldier steps in, throwing a salute. “Commander…the invaders! They seem to be in retreat!”

“What!?”

“Estimated over 1000 black aliens turned tail left their active battlefields, returning to wherever they came from. Alien ships tracked leaving the surface all seem to be converging at the Space Colony ARK.” Vector and Espio glance at each other for a moment.

The Commander pounds his fist onto the side of the chair as he shouts, “The Eclipse Cannon! This isn’t a retreat, soldier! It’s an attack plan!” He presses down on a button on the chair’s arm, channeling his voice through the base’s PA system. “Attention all units! Mobilize all mech battle sections! We must stop the aliens from infiltrating the ARK at any cost!” He takes his hand back. “And somebody get these clowns out of my command room!”

The messenger soldier holds up his weapon threateningly at the Chaotix. They all raise their hands at once in surrender. He motions for them to proceed out the door. “You heard the Commander, get moving!” They slowly file out.

That was when I first started getting suspicious. Everything seemed to center around that ARK. There was something that connected the Professor to those aliens, and whatever it was, my employer seemed to know about it. I didn’t know what the answer was yet. But I knew the only way to figure it out was to get to the ARK and see for myself. And I wasn’t going to let such a minor setback keep me from finding the truth.

It’s that time again! Time to get a sneak peek at the next episode of The Chaos Project!

Shadow’s been acting strange recently. And Sonic has finally come to confront him about it. But it seems Sonic is the last person Shadow wants to hear from.

Sonic looks down in sadness from what Shadow says. “Shadow…”

Shadow suddenly stands, and walks past Sonic without a word.

“And where are you going?”

Shadow stops just long enough to answer, “For a walk. You wanted me to get out, didn’t you?” Then he continues his way out. Sonic doesn’t stop him.

Shadow marches along past the row of tents that mark the Rebellion camp, following along with the stream that runs through the center of the canyon. The camp seems to be pretty quiet, apparently mostly empty. He continues to walk in silence for quite some time. Eventually, he reaches a large, thick tree right in the canyon’s center, with an Emerald-shaped carving in its bark. The memorial for Chaos. He stops to stare at it for a while. His eyes shut as he clenches a fist at his side. Then he walks on past.

The area he proceeds into has quite a few more trees, almost like a small forest contained within the widening walls of the canyon. After a few moments, another pair of footsteps fall in line beside his. Shadow finally looks up and around his shoulder. Hero gives him a smile and a wave as he continues to walk alongside him.

“What do you want?”

Hero gives a shrug, and waves a hand past Shadow out to the forest.

“I don’t want your company. We may have worked together before, but that doesn’t make us friends.”

Beside Hero, Bruno lets out an angry squeak as he shakes a balled up tentacle at Shadow. Hero gasps at whatever it is he hears in the alien language, and starts waving his hands to get him to calm down.

Shadow rolls his eyes. “Whatever. Do what you want.” They continue their walk together for a while longer. Suddenly, Shadow stops in place again as one of his ears twitches. “Did you hear that?”

Hero glances around for a moment, but eventually gives another shrug.

A blur of motion passes behind Shadow. He turns sharply look at it, but he’s too slow to see anything. He tenses up as he advises quietly, “Be on guard. We’re being followed.”

Hero pulls his Wispon close, while Bruno moves around to watch his back. But everything is silent.

A dark-furred figure stands with his back pressed against the shadowed side of a tree, trying as hard as he can to glance around it without being seen. In his hand, the headband-wearing Jackal holds a weapon, a long dagger with a green hilt and a wavy blade.

Who could this bladed assailant be? What could he want? And what’s wrong with Shadow? Find out, on the next episode of The Chaos Project!
