Be prepared to ask yourself: “Is that really how it happened?” To celebrate the release of Sonic Mania, I’ve published a new page on the website; the Sonic the Hedgehog Timeline. This page attempts to set straight the many events, historical and modern alike, that have occurred in the Sonic Universe, including events from The Chaos Project. This timeline is not official, nor canon, but explains the timescale as it is used in the story. It was constructed using a combination of specific dates mentioned in-game, extrapolation of approximate time between games, and plenty of wild guesses.
Long title, but I couldn’t resist. Anyhow, I’ve mentioned a few times before that the general theme of Sonic Forces is very similar to my own ideas for this story, which scares me. I’m getting a little tired of using the words “wait and see.” Well, I waited until today, and I saw. New Sonic Forces footage has been released from E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo), with more likely to come. This new footage, seen below, actually has me a heck of a lot more excited for the game than I already was, but it also makes me even more scared than ever.
The very first thing you do as Sonic is to go look for Shadow (I think)! It’s so obvious, and it’s so amazing! Story implications for this game just went through the roof! After Sonic Boom, I was really afraid for what they would do with Shadow should he ever reappear in the canon, but now it’s clear that they’re putting him in what is perhaps the exact role I would want to see. But, while nothing absolutely shockingly new happened in this footage (except maybe Silver, but that was already leaked), it put a lot of things in perspective. It is now clear that “Join the Resistance” isn’t just an arbitrary tagline. There is very clearly a larger resistance force at work than just Sonics and the Hero (or is it Avatar now?), especially given the appearance of “Soldier” during the Hero gameplay, suggesting that the forces go beyond even Sonic’s group of friends (a step above what I had planned for at least the first season, so kudos to Sonic Team for that).
Point is, this is turning out a lot closer to what I have than what I was expecting. But it’s not time to abandon ship just yet. Currently, we are finishing up the “Birth of Blacklight” arc. Next up is the “Dawn of Chaos” arc (I’ll give you one guess at the character it introduces). After that was a planned arc which does not have a solidified name yet, which would tie up loose ends and set the stage for Crisis of Chaos. The concept for that…well, let’s just call it “Shadow Forces.” It’s not exactly the same setup as Sonic Forces, but it’s very similar. Sonic becomes incapacitated, and Eggman (as well as another foe) begin taking over the world, with little to stand in their way. Tails manages to recruit Shadow to fight back, then GUN manages to recruit both of them to form a team of generals, composed of all (or most, anyways) of Sonic’s friends. What ensues is a war, including tactics of diversion and defense very similar to those described by the characters in this new gameplay footage. I can no longer ignore these similarities. That’s why I’ve decided to hold back on writing this arc altogether, until I witness the story of Forces for myself, beginning to end. November is quite a ways away. I’ll continue releasing the next two arcs as normal, but after that there will be a long break while I figure this out. I purposefully left room in the timeline for more games to happen between Sonic Lost World and Speed of Time, but I never expected something so heavy on lore after what we’ve been getting over the past 10 years or so. Worst case scenario, Sonic Forces completely obliterates any semblance of canon that my story ever had, and I’ll have to make a spectacular decanonizing special episode very soon into Season 1. That would likely mean that the events of Sonic Forces would be ignored for this upcoming arc, and it would proceed as normal. Best case scenario (which probably isn’t happening at this point because of Silver), everything about Forces falls perfectly into place, stepping on none of my metaphorical toes, in which case I might even be able to convert what I have into a Forces sequel (or at least tie-in).
Speaking of Silver, I give about a 95% chance that I’ll have to start doing some retconning (assuming that I accept Forces as canon to the Chaos Project universe). That would mean literally going back and changing the content of those episodes, and making a note on this website of what was changed. I did what I did with Silver because I assumed he would almost certainly never appear in an important role in a canon Sonic game ever again. Because of that assumption, I constructed the story in a way that does not allow for him to appear between then and 06. But now, he does. Of course, I feel like chances are relatively high (maybe 40% as of now) that this game will end with a giant reset button ala Sonic 06, self-decanonizing the entire contents of the game, including any interactions with Silver. I’m not sure why they would want to do that after the way people complained about 06, but then again, how else would they explain such a rapid removal of Eggman’s influence over 99% of the world? Of course, there are plenty of magic explanations out there, but a time reset would certainly be the easiest and cleanest. One last thing of note is the “Soldier” mentioned earlier. In my story, I have so far inferred and intend to elaborate on the fact that Shadow was one of the only animoids involved with GUN. Of course, there are others, such as Rouge, but the point being made was that it is an occupation dominated by humans. Mr. Soldier was definitely not a human. This doesn’t exactly contradict my story, but I’d say it deserves an explanation. Mr. Soldier may end up with a real name and a character-of-the-week appearance in the Chaos Project. Of course, he might not have been GUN at all, but I’d say the helmet was pretty reminiscent. I’d actually be a little upset if they decided that they should include a military that isn’t GUN. It exists for a reason. But, I suppose Mr. Soldier could be an average joe who only became a soldier when he joined Sonic’s forces, sort of like the Rebel Alliance from Star Wars. I’d be okay with that, but I still really hope they don’t ignore the existence of GUN in this game. It’d be a big waste and a disappointment.
-Until next time, remember, destiny lies before you.
EDIT: 10 steps forward and 1 step back! Take a look.
The preview image for the video alone tells you all you need to know. I was very wrong about the role of Shadow. I’m very fearful of character reversion, but, if we’re being honest, it’s small price to pay for a game with a dramatic, potentially deep and enriching story with continuity to the rest of the series. I won’t even go in to the thousand different theories running through my head. (By the way, Chaos looks gorgeous.)
Mostly, I’m here to deliver the unfortunate news that, as happened after the Speed of Time arc, The Chaos Project will now be going on another short break while I finish writing the final episode of the upcoming arc, Birth of Blacklight, now that the Black Cloak arc is finished. As was the case last time, I’ll be spreading out the posting content so that I still have something to publish every Saturday. Normally, I would be posting the review of last week’s episode now, but between Thursday’s Opinion Piece of Sonic Forces and this post, I feel that I have enough to push that off to next week. Expect a preview of next episode the following week, and the episode itself to be published the week after that.
Now, there is a little more to talk about. I’ve been neglecting to update some of the finer details on the website after publishing the last few episodes, but now everything is completely up-to-date, and then some. Preparations for the upcoming arc have been made, such as the reorganization of the character guide to reflect the most important characters to come. More importantly, I’ve published a new page, title “Image Gallery,” which contains all of the custom images I’ve ever made for these stories, including several images which have been replaced and can no longer be seen anywhere else. Also included are some first looks at custom-made sprites for characters who haven’t had their official debuts yet, such as Omega and the Chaotix. Most importantly, there is a 100% exclusive image of “Super Black Cloak,” Shadow in his Super Form as seen in the final episode of the Black Cloak arc, complete with broken chains, torn face mask, material burned away from the feet, and of course, his new superhero emblem emblazoned on his chest. Keep an eye out in the coming weeks for the addition of a preview look at the cover art for the upcoming story arc.

Apologies for anyone this may inconvenience, but from here forwards, The Chaos Project is moving from Thursdays (10:30 AM PDT, 1:30 PM EDT, 6:30 PM UTC) to Fridays at the same time of day. I originally posted the first episode on Thursday, June 23rd, in celebration of Sonic’s 25th Anniversary. Now that the month of the Anniversary is passed, and the premiere arc of the series is over, I have decided that Fridays work out much better for my schedule, and hopefully they will for yours as well. So, look out for the first episode of Season 0, and the beginning of the Speed of Time arc, on Friday, July 22nd.

Episode 1 comes out tomorrow! I promised you some more info, and here it is: a preview of what’s to come. A lot is at stake as Sonic and Tails try to find and stop Eggman. But Eggman, the evil genius that he is, is already ten steps ahead. What is this strange and terrible machine that he has made, that Sonic is so concerned about? Please have a look at this preview of Episode 2 of the Premiere Event.
Eggman stands alone in a small hangar. He appears to be impatient. Behind him sits an odd machine, long in shape. Three spike structures come out of the top towards the back. Long cables stick out of the far back. It hardly even looks like it’s meant to stand up on its own.
Sonic bursts through the roof and lands on the floor right in front of Eggman. “Give it up, Eggman. It’s over.” Tails flutters in after him.
“Over? Well, I suppose we can agree on something then. You’ve been so busy chasing me, I’m sure you haven’t even realized what’s going on.”
Tails demands, “What are you talking about!?”
“Oh, my poor Tails. I thought you were smarter than this. You can’t even recognize a diversion when you see one? As we speak, every major city in the world is under attack. Well, every city except for one.” He points straight downwards. “The invasion has already begun. But I would like to cut you a deal.” He pulls out a small device. “Surrender yourself and your one measly Chaos Emerald to me, and I will enter the code to deactivate every last robot I control. And the fine citizens of Station Square will never have to meet my friend here.” He pats the large machine behind him. “And I’m not talking for now. I’m talking for good. No more robots. Ever. And all you have to do is stay here for a few days, maybe a week or two, and then you’ll be free to return to your friends. Just think about the millions, maybe billions of people who won’t get hurt if you make the right decision. It’s an offer you can’t refuse.” Sonic stares curiously at the strange machine, as if recognizing it somehow. Eggman looks in the same direction. “You know, I am quite fond of this one.”
“And why is that?”
“Hmm… Well, to begin with, I couldn’t have possibly made it without the help of my grandfather. It’s almost as if this connects us. But, more importantly, it plays off of your weakness. And I didn’t even have to come up with it! But enough chatter. We were having a discussion.”
Sonic says nothing for a moment. Tails shouts, “Come on, Sonic! You can’t actually be thinking about this, can you?”
“Stay out of it, fox! This is between Sonic and I.” He turns back to Sonic. “Well then? What is your answer?”
Sonic remains silent a moment more. “…I don’t know what it is that you’re planning. I don’t know what you want me for. What I do know is that you’ve never once kept your word to me. If you expect me to bargain with you after making a reputation like that…then you really are as dumb as you look! Tails, grab that remote!” As Tails makes a grab for the device that Eggman holds, Sonic runs around the strange machine, looking for some sort of weak point.
Before Tails can ever reach his goal, Eggman says, “Very well then,” and presses a single key. The floor instantly parts open beneath the machine, and it plummets back towards earth.
Sonic shouts “No!” Without hesitation, he dives straight into the opening after it.
“Sonic!” Tails dives out after him.
Eggman shakes his head in disapproval, and presses another button to close the hatch. He takes out a communicator. “Orbot, Cubot, set our course back to base. The Hedgehog has been taken care of.” A voice responds briefly, “Yes, Sir.”
And there you have it. See this episode in its full context on Thursday, June 30th, at 10:30 AM PDT. And remember to read the first episode tomorrow at that time, Sonic’s 25th Anniversary. Hope to see you there!
Only five days remain until the release of The Chaos Project. I am so excited to finally get this thing rolling. To celebrate, I have some news to share with you! Look forward to reading the first episode on Thursday, June 23rd, at 10:30 AM PDT, 1:30 PM EDT, 6:30 PM UTC! Episodes will continue to release every Thursday at that time for many months to come. Look forward to more info before that day comes!
-And until next time, remember to always live and learn!
As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve been having a bit of trouble writing at a steady pace. But as of now, I have finally decided upon a point at which I am nearly certain I can meet all of my goals. The first epsiode of The Chaos Project will be published on Thursday, June 23rd. Bonus points if you know why. I cannot confirm a time of day at this point, but that information may come soon. I hope to see you all then!
